Mobile Works Will Fund Over 150 Disaster Relief Jobs in City Of Mobile, Mobile County and Other Local Municipalities
MOBILE, Alabama - September 7, 2005 - Mobile Works Inc. announced today that it had received $800,000 in grant monies from the Department of Labor under Section 173 of the Workforce Investment Act that will be awarded to the City of Mobile, Mobile County and other municipalities within the county of Mobile for Hurricane Katrina disaster relief. "This Hurricane Katrina Disaster Relief Grant represents one of the many investments by Mobile Works to provide jobs, training and economic initiatives for Mobile," said Sydney Raine, President of Mobile Works.
National Emergency Grants are discretionary grants awarded by the Secretary of Labor that provide supplemental funding for workforce development, employment services and other assistance for workers affected by major economic issues, such as plant closures, and major disasters such as hurricanes, tornadoes or floods, during which their jobs were displaced.
Mobile Works has targeted the grant monies for infrastructure cleanup of the City of Mobile and Mobile County for the damage from Hurricane Katrinawith over 150 local workers being hired for these tasks. Eligible adult workers for the over 150 temporary positions are those who were displaced either temporarily or permanently by Hurricane Katrina, other long-term displaced workers and either short-term or long-term unemployed workers as well. The temporary positions will be used for general debris removal, post-storm cleanup and other basic tasks.
"This award will aid significantly in the Mobile area's recovery and, just as importantly, will help over 150 people whose jobs were displaced by Katrina to bring in much-needed income until they can find a permanent position or return to their jobs as companies reopen," said Dr. Leida Javier-Ferrell, Vice-President, Adult and Youth Services for Mobile Works.
People interested in applying for these jobs should go in person to see Mobile Works at the Alabama Career Center, bringing their valid driver's license and Social Security card, by Friday, September 9, 2005, close of business. The Alabama Career Center is open from 8:00 am to 4:30 pm, Monday through Friday, and is located at 515 Springhill Plaza Court, Mobile, Alabama 36608, just off of I-65 and Springhill Avenue.
