Komeshion (Mesie) Williams
Reality Program-Theodore High School
Mobile County Public Schools Summer Jobs for Youth Program
A Combination of Music and Hard Work Helped Her Find Her Rhythm
Komeshion Williams, better known as Mesie to her friends, graduated in May 2005 from Theodore High School and is going to be attending Bishop State Community College in January 2006, majoring in music. After Bishop State, she has plans to go on to Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge.
Williams has been involved with music since 3rd grade and was in the school chorus every single year since 7th grade, including every year at Theodore High School. After graduation from college, she has plans to become a music teacher, with her goal being to teach high school chorus right here at home-the Theodore High School Chorus. She considers that the best way to give back what she has gotten.
Because Williams has definitely overcome some challenges. When she first took the Alabama Graduation Exam she failed in two or three areas of the exam. Since that would impede her goals of being a music teacher, Williams worked diligently with Kimberly Coleman, the Reality Program Manager at Theodore High School, to study and pass the entire exam. She also struggled in geometry and she had to take Geometry 1A in summer school before her senior year and managed to get through it and pass Geometry1B in her last year to be able to graduate with her class.
"Mesie took full advantage of the Reality Program and really worked hard to go from a failing situation to passing all parts of the graduation exam with flying colors early in her junior year," Coleman states. "In addition, she had serious transportation issues during that critical year of studying for the exam, but did not let it deter her as many young people would have done-she's truly motivated to succeed." Williams did whatever was necessary to get to her lessons with Coleman and so that she could use the computer because she did not have a computer at home and computer time during school hours is limited.
This summer Williams participated in the Mobile County Public Schools Summer Jobs for Youth Program and was able to work with All Specialities and Promotions in Theodore. For a couple of weeks she filled in with administrative tasks such as answering the phone and doing computer work for the company, which was in the process of hiring an administrative assistant. That was valuable experience to Williams, but after that, it got exciting as she was able to help make sales calls. Relying on her network of contacts in local churches and schools, Williams was able to actually make sales for the company and more than earn her salary, a fact of which she is proud.
Williams attributes her success to being motivated and as she says, "I motivate myself-no one else has to do it for me-because I believe in myself and I truly want to teach music. I put my mind to it that I was going to succeed and I also know that putting God first helped me do all this because He and my family were with me every step of the way." At Mobile Works, we are proud of Komeshion "Mesie" Williams and we know that she has everything it takes to make it in music and in life-self-motivation, determination and talent.
