Technology: Good and Bad
Years ago, searching for a job involved stacks of resumes, several phone calls, stamps and envelopes. Today, searching for a job can be as simple as the "click of a mouse". Advances in computer technology have made it easier for jobseekers to contact with prospective employers within a matter of minutes, thanks to the Internet. Jobseekers have a wealth of information on jobs, career choices and career tips that's available to them on the Internet.
Listed below are a few tips to consider when applying or searching for a job online.
Follow directions-Employers may ask that you follow specific instructions when applying online (i.e. certain type of font, will ask you post a resume rather than fax or may request a scannable etc.). Don't risk having your resume deleted or not viewed because directions weren't properly followed .Most employers are looking for specific things when requesting specific information.
Have valid contact information- Always use a professional e-mail address (i.e. first initial and last name). Don't use an e-mail address that may cause an employer to question your ability to do the job. Employers may question your work ethic and commitment if they receive an email with an address such as "ihatetowork@_____" or "partyanimal@_____".
Ax the form letter and distribution list- Employers want to know that you are interested in their company.
Use updated software-Use current software that employers will recognize. Employers may toss your resume if they have to find an alternate system or program to view your resume. If you don't have access to a computer with updated software, visit your local library or the Alabama Career Center.
Remember e-mail etiquette - When sending an e-mail, please fill in the subject line. Generic information such as "available job openings" does little to get the employers attention. Specific job information such as "experienced project manager opening" in the subject line ensures that your information will be given to the appropriate person right away.
