43 Young Workers receive
Career Readiness Certificates

Forty-three participants in the Mobile County Public Schools Career Choices 101 Program received the Career Readiness Certificate on Thursday during a special ceremony in the auditorium of the new Business Technology Center on the Main Campus of Bishop State Community College.

Career Choices 101, a partnership between the Mobile County Public School System and Mobile Works, Inc., is a summer jobs program for high school juniors and seniors.

Because of the increasing number of job opportunities in the Mobile area and the increasing interest in the WorkKeys system, the decision was made to offer the WorkKeys (focusing on career readiness) assessments to the group. The Career Readiness Certificate (CRC) measured the participants skill levels in three areas reading for information, locating information and applied math. Twenty-three bronze, 19 silver and one gold certificate were issued during the ceremony.

The job skills assessments were administered by the WorkKeys Service Center (Value Added Reseller) of Bishop State Community College. The scores results were submitted to the Alabama Office of Workforce Development, which certified the certificates and secured the signatures of Governor Bob Riley and Alabama College System Chancellor Bradley R. Byrne.

The certificates can be submitted to any employer in the United States of America along with other required pre-hire documents.

Takesha Dean was awarded the gold certificate, having achieved WorkKeys scores of five or greater in the essential employability skills. Based on her scores, Takesha performs at a very high level of proficiency in APPLIED MATHEMATICS can decide what information, calculations or unit conversions to use to solve problems, can caculate using mixed units, divide negative numbers, etc.; LOCATING INFORMATION can summarize information in one or more detailed or complicated graphics, can identify trends shown in one or more detailed or complicated graphics, etc.; and READING FOR INFORMATION can identify the correct meaning of an acronym that is defined in a document, identify the paraphrased definition of a technical term or jargon that is defined in a document, can apply complex instructions.
