Wednesday, Sep 1st, 2010

MONTGOMERYWorkers in Mobile County who are unemployed because of business closings or downsizings could find the path back to economic stability thanks to a $293,000 grant awarded by Gov. Bob Riley.

Mobile Works Inc. will use the grant to train 71 workers for new careers in industries like shipbuilding, manufacturing and construction.

Unemployed Alabamians face many challenges, but the assistance funded by this grant will help some of them learn new skills and re-enter the workforce, Riley said.

Workers who have been displaced recently are eligible for training funds. Mobile Works will place workers in on-the-job training programs where they earn a salary while learning the skills needed for full-time permanent employment in their industry. Other participants may receive training provided by the states two-year college system or private training institutions that have meet state qualifications.

The Governors Office of Workforce Development is administering the grant with support from the Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs and the Alabama Department of Industrial Relations.

Riley notified Mobile Mayor Sam Jones that the grant had been approved.
